This years World Cup, being the 22 World Cup is being hosted in the coutry Qatar, located in Asia next to Saudi Arabia. This is also the first world cup ever to be hosted during Winter, because of Qatars warm climate. Qatar was chosen to host the World Cup for a few reasons. One reason was because FIFA wanted to bring the World Cup to a new part of the world, and a World Cup has never been hosted in an Islamic country. Another reason for the World Cup being held in Qatar is because of the contruction of infrastructure that was needed to create the staduims which opened up many different jobs for people. Each staduim is also no less than 2 hours apart, making it easier for fans to watch more games. Seven staduims were built for this world cup, all using air conditioning. The largest staduim can hold 100,000 people. Qatar was also chosen because it gives Qatar a chance to celebrate it's growing love for the game.
But, Qatar being chosen has been a huge controversy for many people. This is mostly because of Qatars rights. For the first time ever, alchohol isn't allowed inside the staduims during games and a lot of fans didn't like this rule. Qatar's goverment doesn't support LGBTQ and isn't allowed in the country, which has caused an uproar in fans from around the world. Also, when you host a country in the World Cup your team autamaticly qualifies for the World Cup. Qatar has never made it into a world cup, and fans think that the World Cup hosts should have some history with the Cup. This showed in the group stage of the cup because Qatar was knocked out, losing all three games versus Equador, Senegal and Netherlands. One of the largest controversies was the harsh conditons of the workers who built the staduims. Around 400-500 workers died building the staduims which is a very large number. This is because of the extreme heat and long days of working, and the Qatar governemnt doesn't have a rule on the number of hours you work.
